What is species testing?
Species testing is carried out to determine what animal your leather comes from. At Eurofins | BLC, we carry out species testing using the process of Microscopy.
Microscopy on Leather
If the grain layer is intact (upper most surface of the leather), then microscopy can be used to determine the species of leather (cow, sheep, pig, goat as examples). Light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy will be used to determine species type by determining specific morphological features unique to a given species of animal.
Why carry out species testing?
Species testing may be required because of specific country trading laws, customs declarations, and consumer interest.
