Nickel Testing - Spot & Release Testing

Eurofins | BLC Nickel Testing Services

Eurofins | BLC can test metal skin contact products for the presence of nickel release through nickel spot testing and nickel release testing.

Types of products Eurofins | BLC can test for nickel include:

  • Sunglasses and spectacle frames
  • Jewellery (jewelry)
  • Watches
  • Body piercings
  • Metal components

What is nickel testing?

EN 1811 is the internationally recognised test method which was devised almost 12 years ago to determine the rate of nickel release from jewellery, spectacle frames and other items. The test was devised to assess whether articles comply with the requirements of the EU REACH regulations on nickel release (Annex XVII).

Why test your metal products for nickel release?

Although not toxic, the exposure to nickel in certain products which are intended to come into direct and prolonged skin contact, such as jewellery, may cause sensitization of humans to nickel and may lead to allergic reactions, known as the “nickel itch” in sensitized individuals.

How long does nickel testing take?

At Eurofins | BLC, we offer two types of nickel testing:

Nickel spot testing

This nickel test is designed to be a screening test to indicate compliance.

Eurofins | BLC Membership Benefits

Eurofins | BLC provides 2 methods of testing various skin contact products for nickel release:

Method 1 - Nickel Spot Testing

The nickel spot test is a presumptive screening test designed to indicate products compliance to the nickel release requirements. It is not a quantitative test. It is also important to note that the nickel spot test is not sensitive enough for the analysis of earring posts or other post assemblies inserted into piercings.

Method 2 - Nickel Release Testing

BS EN 1811:2011 +A1: 2015 is applicable to articles intended to come into prolonged and direct contact with the skin and all post assemblies inserted into body piercings, but does not apply to spectacle frames and sunglasses.

What are the limits for Nickel release?

BS EN 1811:2011 +A1: 2015 will be used to verify the conformity of the products to the regulation:

  • Any post assemblies which are inserted into pierced ears and other pierced parts of the human body: 0.2 µg/cm2/week.
  • Articles intended to come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin such as: necklaces, watch straps, bracelets etc: 0.5 µg/cm2/week.
