Businesses operating within the UK must comply with the Modern Slavery Act (MSA)

The Modern Slavery Act (MSA) came into force in October 2015, establishing a legal obligation for businesses within the UK to be transparent and accountable regarding their strategy for addressing the issue of modern slavery, both within their own operations and supply chains.

The MSA also created a corporate reporting requirement for all businesses operating within the UK with an annual turnover of £36 million or more, to disclose an annual Anti-Slavery and Human Trafficking Statement.

Businesses operating within the UK also extends to non-UK based companies carrying on a business, or part of a business, within the UK.

In essence, this statement must detail the steps taken during the financial year to ensure an organisation, and its supply chains, are free of modern slavery.

UK Anti-Slavery Day

An annual event that takes place in October which marks Anti-Slavery Day in the UK.

Anti-Slavery Day aims to raise awareness of modern slavery issues and encourage businesses, and other stakeholders, to eradicate it in all of its forms, including forced labour, exploitation and human trafficking.

Globally, over 35 million people are believed to be subject to modern slavery. Of this number, an estimated 21 million people are in forced labour.

Sectors at high risk of modern slavery occurring in their supply chain include retail, textile and leather processing, garment and apparel manufacture.
