Achieving Responsible Chemical Management
Whilst chemicals play an enormous role in our everyday lives, the desire to reduce the exposure to humans and the environment to hazardous and toxic chemistry is ever growing.
How does responsible chemical management impact on brands and retailers?
Brands and retailers are increasingly aware of the risks posed by upstream chemical use and the effects of those chemicals in manufacturing processes for workers, consumers, and the environment. Furthermore, the chemical content of consumer products is being increasingly scrutinised by NGOs, governments, and consumer organisations.
To address this global issue, brands and retailers are requiring better chemical inputs to be used upstream to ensure responsible chemical footprints for the products sold, which places additional scrutiny on the chemical companies and their own supply chains.
How does ZDHC conformance support responsible chemical management?
The need to address the levels of hazardous chemicals in the supply chain is never more relevant than in the footwear and apparel sectors. Programmes such as ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemistry) which has value chain alignment and commitment to widespread implementation of sustainable chemistry and best practice within the textile, leather and footwear industries. Such goals are likely to grow in ambition to reach other complex and chemical intensive supply chains.
Using Chem-MAP to achieve responsible chemical management
The new innovative BLC Chem-MAP Programme allows chemical suppliers to the leather, textiles and footwear supply chains to achieve ZDHC conformance to level 3, through training, audits and certification. This ZDHC approved MRSL verification programme is designed to encorporate chemical suppliers, manufacturers and brands and retailers by using a preventative approach, ensuring that only responsible chemicals enter the supply chain, protecting workers, consumers, and the environment.
