What is Cadmium?
Cadmium is a heavy metal, commonly used as a pigment in paint and in jewellery, as well as stabilizers in PVC compounds. Cadmium is highly ductile, making it extremely suitable for metal alloys.
What is Cadmium testing?
Cadmium testing is conducted to see how much cadmium is present in a product. Eurofins | BLC can carry out cadmium testing in a large range of substrates including leather, textile, metal, synthetics, glass, plastic, and rubber.
There are several different test methods for cadmium content, dependent on for which legislation you are testing. There are, essentially, two principles of testing: Total Content and Extractable Content:
Total-Content
Samples are ground/cut and placed in acid, and then microwave digested followed by ICP-MS analysis. Looks for the total content of heavy metals.
Extractable Content
Looks for the heavy metals which are mobile within the product through extraction either in sweat or acid solution followed by ICP-MS analysis.
Why test for Cadmium?
Cadmium is a toxic metal which is globally highly regulated. Regulation of significance is the cadmium directive EN71-3 (migration of elements) and Proposition 65 settlement.
