Why do you need to test for Azo Dyes?
Azo dyes may be used as colourants in the leather and textiles sector for a variety of consumer products. Certain azo dyes can under reactive conditions cleave to produce primary aromatic amines which are known carcinogens and classified as skin sensitisers.
Azo dyes are also regulated by chemical legislation including REACH, China GB Standards and California Proposition 65. Therefore, it is the responsibility of manufacturers, brands and retailers to carry out azo dyes testing to ensure compliance for products that imported and retailed globally.
What types of products are azo dyes usually found in?
Azo dyes can be used in a wide range of substrates such as:
- Textile
- Leather
- Plastic
- Paper
- Mineral oil
- Wax

What are azo dyes?
Azo dyes are a group of dyes that may often be used as colourants in the textiles industry for their increased colour fastness properties and for providing a wide range of vibrant colours.
What are the risks of not testing for azo dyes?
Azo dyes are regulated internationally through a number of different chemical regulations (which are detailed in the next section), therefore, if your business imports/exports, manufactures or retails products internationally, you are legally obliged to comply with the relevant geographical regulation.
Failure to comply may result in damage to brand reputation and may also have a significant financial impact on the business through fines imposed by regulatory bodies and product recalls.
Are azo dyes regulated in any chemical legislation?
Azo dyes are widely regulated through a number of international chemical regulations:
- Annex XVII of REACH regulation
- China Guobiao Standards (GB Standards)
- California Proposition 65 (Prop 65)
