World leaders promise an END to deforestation by 2030 – why we ALL now need to fully commit to ZERO.
World leaders promise an END to deforestation by 2030 – why we ALL now need to fully commit to ZERO.
Over 100 world leaders have promised to end and reverse deforestation by 2030, with countries pledging 14bn of public and private funding to support commitment. To achieve this, organisations that use materials which have a deforestation risk must map and understand their supply chains.
Countries such as the UK, USA, Indonesia, Russia and Brazil committed to the global pledge, which included a promise to remove deforestation from global trade of food and agricultural products which drive the reduction of forests to make way for cattle grazing.
Approximately 48% of the fashion’s supply chain is still linked with deforestation and even though the industry is making progress with sustainability initiatives, there is still plenty to be achieved before reaching zero deforestation.
Ensuring apparel, footwear, bags, and accessories are free from links to deforestation can be achieved through understanding and managing supply chains. An organisation should be able to trace back product components through suppliers to understand if that product is in-line with ethical responsibilities and commitments such as zero deforestation.
When using leather in products, the supply chain journey can be complex as the leather will need to be mapped from raw material, tannery to finished product. Understanding the supply chain to raw material source is challenging but imperative, otherwise a commitment of zero deforestation cannot be achieved.
Supply Chain Mapping can support with creating transparency in product supply chains when using leather as a material in products. This software tool can be used to identify deforestation risk when sourcing leather so that finished products can be sold with the confidence that they are not linked to deforestation. The tool can also be used for mapping textiles, rubber, cotton, plastics, metal, wood and pigments.
