We understand the challenges associated with making leather and supplying product to manufacturers and retailers.

Therefore, manufacturers and suppliers are under pressure to deliver leather faster, in smaller quantities, and of a consistent quality.

Leather testing and verification

BLC conducts a wide variety of individual leather tests and verification on leather products and samples in the following areas:

Leather Verification

Our leather experts will determine whether your product or sample is genuine leather and the type, using our state of the art Scanning Electron Microscope. If your product is confirmed to be 'genuine leather', you can use this phrase to market your products.

Leather Verification

Leathermark Verification

BLC are holders of licensing rights of the Leathermark in the UK. Therefore, all brands, retailers and manufacturers wanting to use the Leathermark on their products destined for retail in the UK must first have their products verified by BLC in accordance to BS 2780:1983. Only BLC members and suppliers to BLC members can use the Leathermark on their products to retail in the UK.

Species Testing

Knowing that your leather is genuine is one thing, but if you need to know what animal species your leather is from, BLC can test your product or sample. We carry out species testing using either microscopy or DNA genotyping.

Specialist Leather Tests

BLC are the leather experts. We can conduct virtually any type of testing on leather and leather product. We conduct specialist leather tests covering chemical compliance, microscopy, and identification of additives or contaminants. Given our in-depth knowledge and experience with leather, we also have the ability to design leather tests.

Wet Blue Testing

BLC conducts quality testing of wet blue for tanning ingredient fluctuations, causing variations post tanning and dyeing. While most testing is often carried out on finished products, many brands and retailers often carry out testing on materials during manufacture. By conducting wet blue testing, the hide is tested at a much earlier stage in the production process. Therefore, any potential contaminants or additives can be identified earlier and a solution created before the finished hide reaches the product manufacturing stage.
