This project now has 7 major sponsors from various points in the leather supply chain. BLC and ADNAS are delighted to have this support for the 9-month project.
As there is currently no complete and reliable system for managing end-to-end traceability within the leather value chain, BLC and ADNAS are developing a DNA traceability system to provide full traceability throughout the leather supply chain, from farm to retail. This level of transparency is a true game changer for the leather industry, providing a guarantee of product origin and supporting sustainable and ethical sourcing of hides and skins. The DNA traceability system also helps to support consumer confidence in determining origins of materials in final products.
The DNA traceability system is designed to work on the principle of generating unique botanical-based synthetic DNA markers (SigNature® T-based system) that have a strong affinity to collagen, the main protein within skin and therefore leather. The markers, which can be unique to a specific operation or facility, will be designed to be recovered and detected when subsequently tested at designated stages throughout the leather production process, even in finished leather/product.
