Innovative Tool to Illustrate the Risk of Chrome VI in Your Supply Chain

Chromium VI (chrome VI), is a chemical substance that is restricted in leather regulation around the world. In today’s global marketplace, understanding where chrome VI risks may arise in the supply chain can be an issue, especially for companies who have complex international supplier and manufacturer networks.

At Eurofins | BLC, we have recently developed an innovative tool to help brands and retailers build a picture of key risk areas where the control and management of chrome VI is likely to be an issue in supplier tanneries. The Chrome VI Risk Profiler is an Excel desktop tool which is questionnaire-based, asking specific questions of tanneries that have been curated by Eurofins | BLC to correctly identify risk associated with chrome VI.

How does the Chrome VI Risk Profiler work?

Once the tannery data is received, it is inputted into the spreadsheet where the chrome VI risk is calculated across 9x key chemical management areas. The overall chrome VI risk score is automatically calculated based on each individual area, some of which are more heavily weighted reflecting their importance, as shown below in an example below:

The tool can hold data from several tanneries so brands and retailers can understand the broad landscape as well as identify risk areas within individual facilities. Armed with this information, decision-makers can immediately use the tool to generate headline risk scores for chrome VI management within the supply chain.

Benefits of using the Chrome VI Risk Profiler

  • Demonstrates that compliance is taken seriously
  • To assess chrome VI risk within the supply chain
  • Helps to identify where chrome VI audits may be needed
  • Helps to formulate a smart testing plan (which suppliers, volume, frequency etc.)
  • Reduces chrome VI failures
  • The individual category scores help to identify which areas of manufacturing require improvement/attention
  • An education piece/training process for the brand and its’ suppliers
  • Easy to use

Furthermore, the Chrome VI Risk Profiler tool can be used in conjunction with the Testing Frequency Calculator tool created by Eurofins | BLC, which helps brands and retailers to create a due diligence testing regime while effectively managing chrome VI risk in their supply chain.

Is your company experiencing chrome VI failures?

If chrome VI is an issue for your business and you are experiencing chrome VI testing failures, you may want to consider the use of the Chrome VI Risk Profiler tool to identify and minimise risk areas within your supply chain. Even if your business rarely experiences chrome VI testing failures, the tool can also identify any weak links which could be attributed to a future failure.
