Greenwashing ban passed by European Parliament

Greenwashing ban passed by European Parliament

The European Parliament has recently passed a directive targeted at combating greenwashing through enhancing product labelling and prohibing businesses for making misleading environmental claims.

This directive prohibits the use of broad environmental claims such as "environmentally friendly", "natural", "biodegradable", "climate neutral", or "eco" unless they are substantiated through third scientific evidence. The directive also bans statements suggesting that a product has a neutral, diminished, or positive environmental impact due to emission offsetting schemes.

Additionally, the directive introduces regulations for sustainability labelling. Moving forward, only labels that are based on officially recognised certification schemes or established by public authorities will be permitted in the EU.

Another aim of the directive is to encourage both producers and consumers to prioritise the longevity of products. It mandates more prominent display of guarantees and plans to introduce a new, standardised label that highlights products with durable credentials.

For the directive to become law, it requires final endorsement from the Council. Following this, it will be published in the Official Journal, and member states will have a two-year period to incorporate it into their national legislation.
