Why test for Chromium VI?
Chromium VI (also referred to as Chrome VI, Chrome 6, CrVI and Hexavalent Chromium) is classified as a human carcinogen (cancer causing) and, additionally, is a known sensitiser meaning that exposure to high levels of Chromium VI can cause skin irritation.
Testing your products for Chromium VI can prevent non compliant products from reaching the market.
Overview of Chromium VI Testing
- Sample in extraction solution on an orbital shaker for 3 hours.
- Extract filtered to remove leather.
- Sample pipetted into volumetric flasks.
- Second aliquot is spiked with Chromium VI to check recovery rate.
- Transfer to vial using syringe filter.
- Load samples onto autosampler with calibrants and perform Analytical Quality Control.
- Raw data is reprocessed and the concentration of Chromium VI is calculated.

The maximum permitted concentration of Chromium VI (also referred to as Chrome VI, Chrome 6, CrVI and Hexavalent Chromium) in leather is 3 mg/kg in accordance with Annex XVII.
