Eurofins | BLC and Applied DNA Sciences Sign Agreement for Commercial Implementation of System for Traceability of Leather

Eurofins | BLC and Applied DNA Sciences Sign Agreement for Commercial Implementation of System for Traceability of Leather

Eurofins | BLC in partnership with Applied DNA Sciences have recently successfully completed a funded research consortium project for trials of DNA traceability in leather and leather products.

The DNA tagging system has been engineered to enable the verification of source and manufacture through to product; a feat of traceability that achieved through one of the most accurate and informative systems in existence for the leather supply chain.

The reliability of the DNA tagging system is based on the robust nature of the artificial DNA, each of which can be assigned to a particular process or manufacturer in the supply chain. The final product would therefore contain a series of DNA markers which can be read by the brand or retailer. The importance of this level of traceability is fundamental to enhancing the authenticity of a product and combatting counterfeits.

The signing of the agreement between Eurofins | BLC and Applied DNA Sciences signifies the next step: commercial implementation of the leather tagging system.
