Slip Resistance Testing

Slip Resistance Testing at BLC

In Europe and the USA, there are legal obligations requiring suppliers to place only safe products on the market and other parts of the world appear to be following suit.  Slip resistance is a critical element of safety testing for footwear.  As consumers become more aware of their rights, there is an increasing chance of litigation.

BLC offer slip resistance testing at our UKAS accredited laboratory, we can test a wide range of footwear on various surfaces and simulated conditions, for example dry and wet tile, or frosted and smooth ice.  BLC is one of the fastest testing laboratories in Europe and we aim to deliver results within 3-5 working days.  Established for over 90 years we have the technical pedigree in slip resistance testing and footwear testing to ensure fast accurate support.

Footwear, surfaces and test conditions are easy to set-up.  The machine used to conduct slip resistance testing incorporates a specially-designed control and data acquisition system which provides the user with the coefficient of friction for each test sample, as well as providing graphical representation of the test data.

It is essential that footwear manufacturers test slip resistance by measuring the coefficient of friction between the sole and different types of flooring under both wet and dry conditions.  Footwear has to be fit for purpose, which means that it should be fit for all its intended purposes, including any indicated by the retailer.

International test methods and standards for assessing slip resistance of footwear are available to provide for consistent testing and assessments of products throughout the European industry.  However, slip resistance is a complex subject with many factors to consider.  An in-depth understanding of footwear is required as well as other associated factors.  Slip resistance testing can be applied to all types of footwear, top pieces, sole units and soling materials.

Whilst many testing laboratories are only able to supply simple pass/fail test reports; BLC is able to offer additional support and advice immediately upon report of a sample failure.  In addition our experience of different material testing means that we ensure the appropriate test methods are used at all times.

We can also advise at the design stage of a new shoe on how to alter or tailor footwear to maximise slip resistance.
