Formaldehyde Testing

Formaldehyde Testing - What is formaldehyde and why it's important to conduct testing

Formaldehyde is a strong smelling, colourless chemical compound commonly used in many industries.

Formaldehyde is often found in everyday consumer products such as footwear, handbags, accessories, garments and beauty cosmetics.  It is also present in adhesives, the manufacturing process of textile goods and as a preservative in some paints, coating products, production of polymers and cosmetics.

Legislation exists that limits the level of formaldehyde used in the above products to protect consumers for safety reasons.  At concentrations above 0.1mg/kg in air, inhaled formaldehyde can irritate the eyes and mucous membranes, potentially resulting in watery eyes, headache, a burning sensation in the throat and difficulty breathing. Formaldehyde is also classified as a carcinogen.

At BLC, we conduct formaldehyde testing to ensure that products are safe and meet legislation, it is important to note that legislation on formaldehyde levels differs around the world.  We can advise you on what tests you should be conducting and provide guidance and support on any negative test results.

We are one of the fastest testing laboratories in Europe and can provide formaldehyde testing results within 3-5 working days.
