Leather and Textile Flammability Testing

BLC are able to offer flammability testing on-site at our UKAS accredited laboratory. BLC are one of the fastest testing laboratories in Europe and deliver results within 5 working days. We possess the technical expertise to develop specifications to ensure that products are fit for purpose and compliant with current legislation.

Flammability testing is an assessment of how easily a product will burn or ignite, causing fire or combustion. Internationally a variety of test protocols and standards exist to quantify flammability.  BLC are familiar with these protocols and can test products to ensure compliance.

In order for upholstery to be compliant with the fire regulations of all countries the product must be tested against one of the approved standards.  If the product is tested in accordance with the British standard it can be sold in the UK only, however if tested with the European standard it can be sold in the whole of Europe except for the UK.

Flammability regulations cover a number of issues including:

• All filling materials must meet specific ignition tests
• All upholstery must be cigarette resistant
• Furniture must be permanently labelled
• Furniture suppliers must maintain records for five years

BLC offer the following leather and textile flammability tests:

BS 5852:Part1:1979 - Fire tests for furniture. Methods of test for the ignitability by smokers' materials of upholstered composites for seating - for the purpose of the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988
