INPE report lowest Brazilian deforestation results since records began

23rd February, 2011

Leather Working Group and other initiatives have already had impact on the Brazilian deforestation project as can be seen by the latest information from INPE (National Institute for Space Research) which recently reported the lowest Brazilian deforestation results since the evaluation of annual surveys of deforestation started in 1988

Greenpeace's view on the big meatpackers was that they appeared to be complying with what they had agreed. What was important to Greenpeace now was transparency of the meatpacker operations. What they would really like to see is third party audits of the meat packers to document what actually was being conducted.

The delay in registration of farms within Matto Grosso was expected to have limited impact on the project as deforestation within the state was low for the timeframe July 2009 - July 2010. Less than 1000km2. The total deforestation for the same period was 6451km2. The worst region for deforestation was the state of PARA, where over half the annual deforestation had taken place (3700km2). Details are available from the Government through the Prodes system managed by INPE. Each year a detailed report about the previous year's deforestation is published.

Greenpeace would like to have an agreed system with the meatpackers to monitor the deforestation. They would like the meatpackers to only buy from farmers that have the CAR with full geo references boundaries. All the CAR registered farms can be found on the SEMA web-site. http://www.sema.mt.gov.br/ Then on a regular basis be checking these farms against the satellite data that is available from the Government through the annual PRODES data system and the more regular monthly monitoring of the DETER satellite system. The DETER data is published every 2-3 months at http://www.obt.inpe.br/deter/
