Hide prices remain high

After some stabilisation in late summer/early autumn of 2010 during the final quarter of the year, hide and skin prices, prices increased again in most regions and further sharp increases were reported throughout the first quarter of 2011, with especially sharp increases in March and April with prices peaking in all regions in April at all time record highs .
These levels proved to be unsustainable, and all regions were reporting by May that the long awaited price correction was taking place, with reductions of 5-10% being reported.
Demand for leather still appears quite strong, with continued growth in the automotive sector and also in the footwear sector where demand in China for footwear, is estimated to increase from 1.5 to 2.8 pairs per person between 2009 and 2011.
Despite the correction in prices so far, prices are still at very high levels that make life difficult for everyone in the chain.
