CPSC important lead update
14th July, 2011
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has evaluated the implications of reducing the lead limit in materials such as plastics, glass and metals to 100 ppm. The current limit is set at 300 ppm. Following intense analysis and exploration by CPSC, it has been confirmed that from the 14th August 2011 (subject to final resolution), the lead limit will be reduced to 100 ppm.
Therefore, all children's products and child appealing products sold, offered for sale, manufactured for sale, distributed in commerce, or imported for sale in the United States must meet the 100 ppm lead content limit. With respect to bicycles and related products and youth motorized recreational vehicles, a stay of enforcement regarding the lead content in certain parts, including metal components is currently in effect until December 31, 2011.
BLC are able to help all customers that fall into the above classification to ensure that their products comply with the reduced lead limit. BLC's recommendation would be that lead is progressively worked out of the supply chain to a position of lead free chemicals. Not only can we provide lead testing but we can also offer support and advice to anyone who is unclear about the new guidance.
It should be noted that the 90 ppm limit for lead in coatings remains. It is possible that this change will have an impact on Proposition 65 and future violations and settlements relating to lead.
