RAPEX is the EU rapid alert system for all dangerous consumer products, with the exception of food, pharmaceutical and medical devices.
It allows for the rapid exchange of information between Member States and the Commission of measures taken to prevent or restrict the marketing or use of products posing a serious risk to the health and safety of consumers.
Measures ordered by national authorities and measures taken voluntarily by producers and distributors are covered by RAPEX.
A report is published on a weekly basis, including detailed information on the products concerned, the risks, the notifying Member State, and the measures adopted in response.
The following details highlight different aspects of notifications for clothing and footwear:
- Second highest notification reported through RAPEX in 2009
- Country of origin with most notifications – China
- Chemicals were the highest with 341 notifications in 2009
- Dimethyl fumarate and azo dyes/chromium VI were the most common
