The key restricted substances related to leather are Chlorinated Phenols, Azo Dyes, Chrome Vl and Formaldehyde. In addition, substances such as Nonyl Phenol Ethoxylates have been added to the list due to the adoption of European Legislation.
Other compounds (organo tin compounds and heavy metals amongst others) are often restricted by Eco-labels and Brand Specifications. The list can be long and complex.
To protect brand image against potentially damaging legal claims, testing of leathers is strongly recommended to ensure these compounds are not present.
Restricted substance testing on leather is highly specialised and to avoid the risk of inaccurate or even incorrect results it should only be carried out by organisations that are dedicated to leather such as BLC.
BLC is positioned to be aware of the most recent legislation to impact on the industry and to provide advice regarding those compounds that should be avoided, along with the appropriate limits and test methods.
Please see our specification page. Our aim is to provide test results within 3-5 days of receipt of samples.
BLC can help with all your testing needs.
