What is REACH?

REACH is a new European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006). It deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances. The new law entered into force on 1 June 2007.

The REACH Regulation calls for the progressive substitution of the most dangerous chemicals when suitable alternatives have been identified.

A candidate list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) and immediate obligations at 28 October 2008 has been published.

A major impact of REACH for retailers, suppliers, tanners and chemical companies is that from 28 October 2008 suppliers of articles with SVHCs present above 0.1% w/w must provide sufficient information to ensure safe use to their customers (and, upon request, to consumers within 45 days of receiving a request for the information). This information must ensure safe use of the article and, as a minimum, include the name of the substance.
