Tip 1 - Finding variations on a word

• solvent also find "solvents"

• chrom finds chrome, chromium, chromate, chromic, etc

Tip 2 - Improving the search

Use near, and, or, and and not to combine words in your search:

• solvent near reduction ranks articles according to the proximity of the words so articles that mention "solvent reduction" are more prominent than articles where the two words occur further apart

• solvent and reduction finds the same articles but without ranking by proximity of the words

• solvent or reduction lists articles that mention either word

• solvent and not reduction finds articles containing "solvent" but excludes articles containing "reduction"

• "solvent reduction" finds that exact expression, including variants such as "solvent reductions"

Tip 3 - Use of alternative words

Think of alternative words or spellings that might be used:

• waterproof or water-proof or water resist

• mold or mould

• chrome or chromium or chromic oxide

Tip 4 - Advanced searching using brackets

Combine a number of search steps together by using brackets:

• (chrome or chromium or chromic oxide) and ageing

• (mold or mould) and (antimould or antimold or fungicide)
